The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) began our 2019 Wacipi with an annual Pow Wow Exhibition at the Mall of America (MOA) Rotunda in Bloomington, Minnesota. The Wacipi, or Pow Wow, is a celebration of life in which Native Americans gather for a cultural and social celebration of dancing, singing and visiting.

2019 Wacipi Friday

2019 Wacipi Friday Evening - Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Hand Drum Contests, Grand Entry & Contests.

The opening night of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Wacipi was a celebration of life, pride, and honor. The Pow Wow festivities kicked off with a Grand Entry, a ceremonious entrance into the dance arena, led by a Native American veteran color guard, visiting dignitaries, tribal royalty, and hundreds of dancers of all ages.

2019 Wacipi Saturday Part 1

2019 Wacipi Saturday Morning - Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Flag Raising & Specials.

Saturday’s Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Wacipi began with a ceremonial flag raising, followed by a Young Native Pride Special, honoring the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Education Department. A “special” is an honorary dance, usually celebrating a specific individual. The Pow Wow continued with the Sage Crooks Special (2019 SMSC Junior Princess) and the second round of the hand drum competition.

2019 Wacipi Saturday Part 2

2019 Wacipi Saturday Afternoon - Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Grand Entry & Contests.

Saturday afternoon featured a Grand Entry led by the Native American veteran color guard carrying the eagle staff and flags. The color guard was followed by visiting dignitaries, tribal royalty, and the dancers, entering the arena by dance style. The exhibitions and contests continued throughout Saturday afternoon.

2019 Wacipi Saturday Part 3

2019 Wacipi Saturday Evening - Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Glynn Crooks Special, Grand Entry, Contests, Fireworks & Hand Drum Finals.

The evening began with the Glynn Crooks special, a memorial men’s traditional non-bustle northern style dance. Glynn A. Crooks, age 67 was a Member of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community who journeyed to the Spirit World in 2018. He spent many years serving on the SMSC Business Council, proudly representing the tribe and its culture, history, and interests on both a local and a national level. He served as chairman of the SMSC Wacipi Committee for more than 25 years. Saturday’s second Grand Entry followed the Glynn Crooks Special. The evening concluded with the hand drum contest finals and fireworks that lit the sky.

2019 Wacipi Sunday Afternoon - Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Grand Entry, Contests and Winners.

Sunday afternoon showcased the final 2019 Wacipi Grand Entry. With all audience members standing; the color guard, visiting royalty and dancers entered the arena for the final time. The afternoon continued with exhibitions and contests. The announcement of the winning dancers and drum groups concluded the celebratory weekend.
