Guided by a strong tradition of helping others, the value of wóokiya (generosity and helping) has defined the Dakota people for generations. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community will honor that tradition at this year’s SMSC Wacipi by providing free backpacks with school supplies in support of Native youth, our neighbors, and Indian Country. One thousand backpacks will be distributed over the three-day powwow thanks to the efforts of the SMSC’s charitable giving and #SMSCgives initiatives.
