2025 SMSC Wacipi Backpack Giveaway

Guided by a strong tradition of helping others, the value of wóokiya (generosity and helping) has defined the Dakota people for generations.

Started in 2021 on a whim and now a yearly tradition, the SMSC will be providing free backpacks with school supplies in support of Native youth, our neighbors, and Indian Country at this year’s SMSC Wacipi.

In addition to the distribution at the SMSC Wacipi, these backpacks have been sent to local Indian Education programs, with an additional 1,750 backpacks and supplies sent to surrounding tribes. This year alone, the SMSC will have distributed 4,792 backpacks and school supplies, just in time for the start of the 2025–2026 school year. Since 2020, the SMSC has distributed over 20,600 backpacks, helping kids to start off their school year.

Students and guardians can stop by the backpack location at the SMSC Wacipi Grounds on August 16 from 11am-11pm to pick up a free backpack while supplies last.
