The value of wóokiya (generosity and helping) has been a meaningful tradition of the Dakota people for generations.
The SMSC’s free backpack giveaway started in 2021 and is now a yearly tradition. The SMSC will provide free backpacks with school supplies in support of Native youth, its neighbors, and Indian Country at this year’s SMSC Wacipi. In addition to the distribution at the SMSC Wacipi, these backpacks have been sent to local Indian Education programs and surrounding tribes.
Students and guardians can stop by the backpack location at the SMSC Wacipi Grounds on Saturday, August 16, from 11am-11pm to pick up a free backpack while supplies last.
